A decision by the government to dissolve the embattled Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has left lecturers across the country fuming.
The University Teachers Association of Ghana insists the action by government is fatally flawed and a travesty of justice against lecturers.
President of the Association Dr. Eric Opoku does not understand why the government decided to dissolve the council and go ahead to include the SRC president in the Interim Council which has no representation for lecturers.
He told Joy News the decision by the government, is not only unfair but an affront to the university teachers in Ghana.
On Thursday, government, through the Education Ministry announced the dissolution of the Governing Council of the KNUST which has been accused of complicity in the state of unrest on campus.
The students accused the Council led by the Vice Chancellor of the university Prof Obiri Danso of oppressing them.
They cited several acts of abuse of students by the university’s security which they claimed appeared to have been supported by the university authorities.
In a response was the democratization of violence by the students through a demonstration on Monday. Videos posted on YouTube and Facebook showed the angry students burning cars and destroying school properties.
The demonstration has received mixed reactions from the public.
While some berated the students for the acts of vandalism, others criticized the university authorities for failing to engage the students.
The University has shut down shortly after and the students asked to go home till further notice.
After preliminary investigations into the chaos, the Council has been dissolved much to the chagrin of lecturers. The university is expected to be reopened within two weeks.
But UTAG has vowed to resist the new interim committee announced by the Education Minister. It is however yet to be seen what their next line of action will be. Videos of the incident can be downloaded online with a video converter mp4 or a youtube mp4 converter
